Nagasaki 1945-2003

It's a sad indictment of me (I'm a day late) and of the way Nagasaki has been relegated to a position off our radar screens just because it was the 2nd city to be devastated by a nuclear bomb. Hiroshima has editorials written about it, while Nagasaki is a news item.

Here's a link to the Nagasaki A-bomb museum.

We saw this on the news last night and I asked Joey if he understood what was going on. He didn't, so I filled him in.

In the bath we had a major discussion of cyptography and its role in World War II. Recommmended in this connection is the Neil Stephenson book 'Cyptonomicon' (but remember this is an uber-geek recommending it).

I remember being in Tokyo and watching that dubious channel and hearing them bleat on about how the ending of Pearl Harbour had been changed for the Japanese and German audiences and how wrong it was for history to be messed about with, and then a couple of weeks later saying absolutely nothing about the movie Hollywood made about the breaking of the Enigma code and made it out to be Americans that had cracked it. I'm sure 'Cyptonomicon' got it right.

Yup. Sure did. And pointed out that the Allies had not cracked all of the Japanese codes. Mostly the diplomatic ones.
