Whoa?

It seems astronomers (and I) jumped too soon with regard to that possible asteroid strike in 2014. "Asteroid flaps are becoming as regular as the first cuckoo in Spring", reports the BBC and there's nothing to worry about. Well then, you can all go ahead and make plans for that day without worrying about a premature curtailment of activities. Maybe you'd like to come to my birthday party. ;+)

Frankly, I was amazed the BBC felt they needed to point that out.

Some of the earliest news reports on it did actually mention that the prediction wasn't very vague.

I thought it was interesting that the BBC themselves made a big whohar about it, and then their Science Editor comes along and plays it down.

Where was he before the news item was released? :)

I meant *was very vague*

I'm one of the biggest fans of the Beeb, but they can get a bit sloppy on their website sometimes. I think an asteroid collision is just an 'attention grabber' that is difficult to pass up either way i.e. coming or not. Guilty! :+)

or maybe... they've found that it really is guaranteed to hit and they decided they didn't want to panic people! ;-)

Or maybe they only want us to THINK that they don't want us to panic ... !!
