I'm not sure if I'll have an Internet connection this weekend, so I'll leave you with one thought for Saturday:
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home!
I looked over Jordan and what did I see,
Comin' for to carry me home!
A band of angels comin' after me,
Comin' for to carry me home!
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home!
If you get there before I do,
Comin' for to carry me home,
Jess tell my friends that I'm acomin' too,
Comin' for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home!
I'm sometimes up and sometimes down,
Comin' for to carry me home,
But still my soul feels heavenly bound
Comin' for to carry me home!
Hope springs eternal.
Posted by Joe at November 21, 2003 06:10 PMWow, that song brings back memories. This was always a favorite tune in our house. Makes me think of family car trips -- cause we'd sing it, especially when driving through the rural south. :)
But I have to admit, it surprises me a little to find it here. Is there a meaning behind you posting this? Or is it as meaningless as someone posting on their blog, say, a Captain America WANK sound effect? ;)
Posted by: Vaneta at November 22, 2003 11:44 AMAs I remember it, the second verse goes something like:
I looked over Jordan
And what did I see
Coming for to carry me home
A band of angels
Coming after me
Coming for to carry me home
There you go then!
Posted by: Lisa at November 22, 2003 09:06 PMVaneta, Swing Low is the England rugby team's anthem - or at least the fan's anthem. If you ever get to London in February/March, try and get tickets for an England rugby match at Twickenham (will be like gold dust for a few years methinks, but it doesn't matter when you go they'll sing it) and you can re-live those long family drives through the south with 70,000 fans belting it out at quite a decibel level. On Saturday England played Australia in the Rugby World Cup final. England won. :+) By the way, I'm hoping to get permission from you to post 'Wank' up here soon. Can I?
Martin, like Lisa says 'there you go then'. Your memory tallies with the version I put up.
Posted by: Joe at November 25, 2003 12:03 PMAlthough, my "there you go then" was in relation to hopes fulfilled. ;-)
Apparently the Aussies were quite taken with the tune as well...
Posted by: Lisa at November 25, 2003 05:03 PMGotcha! Hopes fulfilled indeed. Brilliant victory. Hope I get to see it one day. Here's a snippet from the Sydney Morning Herald about the tune and the singing of the English:
"You are better singers than we are (and just quietly, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is growing on us, as is Jonny without an 'h')."
Excellent song. Must get hold of a copy sung by a good gospel singer. In a sporting context, I have to say I don't like the English football fans singing it. Very much an _exclusive_ rugby tune to me.
Posted by: Joe at November 25, 2003 05:52 PMI'm just wondering now if I have it by Mahalia Jackson.
Posted by: DJ at November 25, 2003 09:53 PMThat was exactly the quote I was looking for, as a matter of fact!
Fantastic match. I'm sure it will show again somewhere. Really kindled an interest in rugby for me as well. I was never very interested before - it was all together too "foreign". Not sure that interest will ever extend to cricket, however. ;-)
Posted by: Lisa at November 26, 2003 03:23 AMCricket really was THE sport for me, but it has disappeared off my radar screen due to zero exposure in Japan. :+(
We've been talking about making plans to go to the Rugby World Cup in France 2007. I don't have too much of an interest in the Olympics and the football one has way too many side issues to even want to go and support England. All that food and wine - and a bit of rugby thrown in. Mmmm!
Posted by: Joe at November 26, 2003 10:06 AMWhat a match indeed! Henry is going to the welcome home dinner for the team next week. He is under instruction to bring back as many momentos of the occasion as possible!
Posted by: Honey at November 26, 2003 07:39 PMJoe Bloggs is very happy to post pictures of members of family holding the Web Ellis trophy or other memorable moments. Looking forward to hearing all about it.
