They do get their knickers in a twist about things on U.S. TV don't they? Or should that be 'bras out of shape'? Move on folks, nothin' happenin' here.
Posted by Joe at February 3, 2004 01:10 PMAren’t people funny though? Boobie, boobie, boobie, like a bunch of fourth graders. Trust me - my son Charlie is a fourth grader and that’s exactly what he’d say. Me? I don’t even know who won the game, but I can tell you it was the right breast that escaped.
Posted by: Ed at February 3, 2004 09:25 PMEscaped? Let loose, more like. Pretty hilarious that they still insist that it wasn't intentional. Last I heard there was supposed to be a red bra under the quick-release bustier. One wonders why you'd wear a star-shaped pastey under a bra, of course.
No such thing as bad PR for Janet, though. She got more coverage (pun only slightly intended) than the Superbowl did by a long, long ways.
Posted by: Lisa at February 3, 2004 11:34 PMIt's now getting totally out of hand over there. The BBC says they're in a state of apoplexy:

Posted by: Joe at February 4, 2004 04:12 PMIt really makes me laugh. I don't recall being so uptight when I lived there, but maybe I was. I do recall being a little shocked by Page 3 girls when I moved here 10 years ago, it must be said. I'm well used to it now.
It is a bit absurd, though. On a forum I moderate, an American woman got all hetted up because someone used the word "damn". Oh please!
Posted by: Lisa at February 4, 2004 05:30 PMThe fact that the networks have been playing it over and over again suggests there is more than a voyeuristic interest in this. I thought America had more pressing matters to be dealing with just now - some primaries, inquiries into lack of WMD, constant flight cancellations from Europe because of supposed threats etc., etc.. Things are obviously better in tra-la-la land than we had all been led to believe!
Posted by: Joe at February 4, 2004 06:11 PMI hope this is more indicative of what the majority of Americans think about the affair:

Posted by: Joe at February 4, 2004 09:30 PMMost Americans I've talked with about it are surprised at the attention it's gathered. I haven't seen figures for how many phone calls the episode generated, but I can say from experience in (much smaller-scale media) that a single complaint can come to be seen as a massive groundswell of viewer discontent.
Note, too, that media coverage of this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. 'Look, everyone's up in arms about this!!'
