Take the test

I wrote in an earlier entry how a lot of people think China/Korea/Japan are the same country. So recent Guest Blogger DJ sent along a link to a site to test if you can tell the difference between the three races or if they all look the same. I was pretty crap at it I'm afraid. My score was the same as the average - 7. I'm not sure what that says about me, but apart from couple of 'dead-cert' Japanese and Chinese faces, I was guessing as much from the clothing as anything else, and with that criteria these days they would all have passed as 'western'!

I only got 6 right. I guess living in Japan doesn't help.

Just to note that completely random guessing should yield a six. The average was seven; I got an eight. Does this tell us more about Asians or Occidentals, though?

What fun! I got a 5, but it was only dumb luck that I didn't get a zero.

It's not so easy guessing a person's ethnicity in the US either. Until this weekend, I would have said that Tiger Woods was black, but he's not. He's Cablinasian, a term that he invented to expresses his white, black, Thai, Chinese, and American Indian heritage. A potent mix to be sure, but he's not alone. There were 10,672 other Americans who marked the same combination on the year 2000 US census.

I found this interesting tidbit, and a lot of other fascinating info about the dramatic changes taking place in US demographics, at http://www.prb.org/.

8 for me Joe. What an interesting test! Will pass it onto others.
