Could the Google Gmail announcement be the biggest April Fools joke in a very long time? I think so, but I hope I'm wrong.
I sent this to the Beeb earlier and I wonder if they'll at least take it off their headlines pretty soon in case I am right.
Ever heard of April Fools? The Beeb (and every other news organnisation) has fallen for the biggest one for many a year!

It is a bit of a worry that the service would evidently include text advertising in each mail which 'matches' the content the same way adverts appear in response to your Google searches. I'd hesitate to think what sort of advertising my messages might trigger. And one could argue that's an invasion of privacy.
The Beeb has yet to change its story. I wonder if Joe's message even prompted them to check.
