Betamax again?

Good to see a rival to the iPod appearing on the market in the shape of Sony's latest Walkman, but I wonder if it won't turn out to be another Betamax - Sony's supposedly superior video system. Why? Well, while the new Walkman is smaller, can hold more songs and has a longer battery life than the iPod, it is incompatible with the mp3 format and can only play songs in Sony's own format. Those restrictions are not good news for Sony methinks. Still if it is instrumental in bringing the price of the iPod down, I certainly won't be complaining.

Sony has been promoting its own music format ever since the MP3 thing began. You buy Sony music from a Sony website using a Sony credit card. Remember when PCs in Japan cost US$10,000 and you could only use NEC cables with your NEC computer?
