Postscript on the Accidental Tourist. NHK, the national broadcaster, just blew him away with a one minute report 55 minutes into the broadcast saying his body will be repatriated soon. I know the news of his body being found actually broke yesterday, but their attitude almost struck of callousness. They were definitely sending a message.
Update: Stewart sent me this Reuters article on an Irish website that actually talks about the earthquake vs. hostage dilemma ... 'cept it hasn't been much of a dilemma!
Posted by Joe at November 1, 2004 08:57 PMI have also noticed a strange ambiguity of reaction here: a mixture of the attention shown to every single Japanese who passes away while abroad and the sense that he got himself into this situation.

Last night on NHK: The first 40 min. covered the earthquake, including a long story about how disabled people are dealing with the crisis.
Then a story about the new phone law, including a chart of how many people they have caught. Third story- a bear fell into a hole, which looked like a pile of sewage. This story included footage of a worker poking the bear with a stick.
Finally, the accidental tourist.
I can't wait for tonight's extended news coverage.
